Ron Ramsay’s Berkshire Music Salons ‘25
Bellefontaine, a mansion designed by Carrere & Hastings, is inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles, with additional elements reminiscent of the Pavilion de Louveciennes and Chateau de Voisins. Built using locally sourced brick and marble from Lee, Massachusetts, the estate was furnished by the Fosters with imported items from France and Italy, including a library with 5,000 volumes and numerous statues in the gardens. A symbol of Gilded Age wealth, the mansion was one of Lenox’s grand summer homes. After the Fosters' ownership, the estate was sold in 1947, with a fire destroying much of its interior in 1949. Despite this, the shell remained and the property was later used as a boarding school from 1961 to 1978. In 1987, Mel Zuckerman and his wife Enid, founders of Canyon Ranch, purchased the estate and spent $40 million restoring it to its original grandeur. Reopened in 1989 as the second Canyon Ranch health resort, Bellefontaine now serves as a luxurious retreat, featuring dining rooms, guest lounges, and a library.
